Geek Guide to Network Management Strategies

Upcoming Geek Speak Webcast:

Top Things to Plan for in Your 2010 Network Management Strategy

Join SolarWinds Head geek as he discusses his top 3 things every network engineer should plan for to be successful in 2010. He’ll discuss each of the following items, how they can impact your network management strategy, and what steps you can take to plan for them.

  • Truly know your network – Understand where you have bottlenecks, single points of failure, and limited management visibility.
  • Distributed management technologies – Understand how network performance metrics differ at different points throughout the network and how to gather those metrics.
  • Virtualization in the network – The virtual servers you saw in 2009 are multiplying and being joined by virtual switches and firewalls and virtual storage. Planning for this additional virtualization will be a key component of your success in 2010.

Geek Guide to Network Management Strategies

Head Geek's Quick Tips

Here are a few tips on network management strategy from our Head Geek:

1.     You can use LAN Surveyor for Visio to automatically discover your network and draw a layer 2/3 topology within Visio. This is a great way to get started with getting to know your network.

2.     Never assume that just because something works from one place it’ll work from another.

3.     Get familiar with virtual server technology. It can be a huge time saver in the long run.
